Who Are Eligible For The VFW Scholarship 2024?

To be eligible for the 2024 Voice Of Democracy (VFW) Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

Patriot’s Pen is a writing contest open to students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades who are enrolled in public, private, or parochial schools in the U.S., its territories, or possessions. It’s also open to dependents of U.S. military or civilian personnel in schools overseas, and home-schooled students.

While U.S. citizenship isn’t required, students must be lawful U.S. permanent residents or have applied for permanent residence and plan to become U.S. citizens. Foreign exchange students are not eligible.

Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy program has given high school students a chance to record an essay on a patriotic or democratic theme. Each year, around 25,000 students from grades 9 through 12 enter the contest, competing for their share of over $1 million in scholarships and prizes.

The top winner of the Voice of Democracy contest gets a $35,000 scholarship that goes directly to their American college, university, or vocational school. There are also other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $21,000. Each state winner receives at least a $1,000 scholarship.
