About Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) was established on May 16, 2014, when Dr. Blade Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education and Training, officially announced it in the South African Government Gazette (no: 37658), under the Higher Education Act of 1997.

In 2011, Minister Blade Nzimande announced plans to separate the Medunsa Campus from the University of Limpopo.

This decision was based on recommendations from a task team led by Prof. Malegapuru Makgoba, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), and Dr. Max Price, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town (UCT).

This led to the establishment of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) in 2014.
