History Of Sioux Empire Fair
On June 3, 1938, Mrs. Winona A. Lyon gave Minnehaha County 49.57 acres of land near West Sioux Falls, on the west side of the Sioux River and south of Highway 38. This land was to be used as a fairground with specific conditions.
It must be called the “William H. Lyon Fair Grounds” and be managed by the county commissioners. The grounds are meant for public use to host county fairs, where farm produce, livestock, and crafts can be displayed, and 4-H Clubs and Home Extension work can be demonstrated. It also allows for public entertainment with various amusements.
On February 17, 1940, an additional deed was made to clarify and expand on the original deed from June 3, 1938. It explained that in case of fire, flood, tornado, or state/national emergency, the five-year requirement would be waived.
