About The Kudumbashree

Kudumbashree is a program in Kerala aimed at reducing poverty and empowering women, run by the State Poverty Eradication Mission (SPEM) under the Kerala government. In Malayalam, “Kudumbashree” means “prosperity of the family,” and the term can refer to both the Kudumbashree Mission and its large network of women-led community groups.

Kudumbashree was started in 1997 after a government task force suggested it. The program was linked to the Kerala government’s efforts to decentralize power to local Panchayats and involve communities in planning development projects from the grassroots level.

The Kudumbashree network has three levels:

Neighbourhood Groups (NHGs) at the base.
Area Development Societies (ADS) in the middle.
Community Development Societies (CDS) at the local government level.
The system is based on successful experiments from the Alappuzha and Malappuram districts in the early 1990s. Kudumbashree expanded across Kerala between 2000 and 2002, and any adult woman can join, with one membership per family.

In 2011, the Government of India recognized Kudumbashree as the State Rural Livelihoods Mission (SRLM) under its National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) program, further boosting its role in improving rural lives.
